On Thursday, June 17, 2021, João Vale de Almeida, the first Ambassador of the European Union to the United Kingdom, joined members of the Trans-Atlantic Business Council for a one-hour discussion on the evolving relationships between the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on President Biden’s recent trip to the EU and UK, the Ambassador observed that European leaders were heartened by the Biden administration’s focus on the region and that the visit was a strong step toward strengthening trans-Atlantic relations.
Ambassador Vale de Almeida also emphasized the importance of a strong trans-Atlantic partnership in the face of global threats, including the COVID-19 pandemic, a recession, and climate change. The Ambassador remarked that challenges remain in the post-Brexit EU-UK relationship, but that there are also important opportunities for cooperation given shared values and priorities.
In his closing remarks following the question-and-answer segment, the Ambassador expressed confidence in the start of a reinvigorated trans-Atlantic partnership.
