On January 29, 2020, the TABC met with Bendt Bendtsen, a former Member of the European Parliament and Deputy Prime Minister from Denmark. It was an engaging discussion where Bendt Bentsen and Giovanni Campi, TABC Director Europe, discussed the new European Commission leadership and a new energy in Brussels. There are a number of issues the new European Commission is focusing on, including implementation of the European Green Deal. They noted several ambitious goals that have been set in the Deal, including pledging to allocate 25% of the Commission’s budget towards the effort. The European Green Deal could result in enormous business opportunities for those within the broad energy space, and will be worth watching as it is implemented.
Additionally, they talked about potential trade discussions between the US and EU, noting that there is positive business climate in Europe that could help drive negotiations. While agriculture issues continue to be a barrier, there is some optimism that common ground can be found. Several other topics were raised during the discussion, including China and carbon pricing, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) signed by President Trump and discussions regarding digital services taxes hosted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris.
